Can You Use 225 Tires Instead of 215?

A 225 tire is nominally 10 mm wider than a 215 tire. That alone does not tell you whether it can replace yours. You need the complete size, the tire manufacturer's approved rim widths and the vehicle's requirements.

Consider 215/55R17 versus 225/55R17. Both fit a 17-inch bead-seat diameter, but the second tire is also taller. The number 55 is a percentage of width, so keeping it unchanged while increasing width increases sidewall height.

What changes in a complete-size comparison?

Nominal geometry calculated from the sidewall code, not measured tire specifications.
SizeSidewallDiameterChange vs 215/55R17
215/55R17118.25 mm668.3 mm0.00%
225/55R17123.75 mm679.3 mm1.65%
225/50R17112.50 mm656.8 mm-1.72%

The 225/55R17 gains 11 mm in total diameter, or about 1.65%. Its radius grows by 5.5 mm. At an indicated 60 mph, a system still calibrated to the smaller tire would correspond to about 61 mph under this simplified geometry model. The speedometer guide explains the assumptions.

Going to 225/50R17 moves the diameter in the opposite direction. Neither row is a replacement recommendation. These examples show why a comparison of only “215 versus 225” misses an essential part of the decision.

Five things to check before ordering

  1. The vehicle specification. Read the placard and owner's manual for your exact version, including any different front and rear sizes. Ask the vehicle or tire manufacturer about an alternative size.
  2. The actual tire's rim-width range. Read the specification sheet for the exact tire model and size. A shared 17-inch diameter does not establish that your wheel width is approved.
  3. Load and speed requirements. Compare the service description and required inflation guidance, not just the first three numbers. Our load index chart explains the codes.
  4. Clearance throughout movement. A static gap beside a parked wheel does not establish clearance at steering lock or suspension compression. Wheel width and offset also affect position.
  5. Vehicle-system compatibility. Confirm requirements for AWD, ABS, stability control, TPMS and calibration. A small calculated diameter difference is not universal approval.

Will the extra width stick out 5 mm on each side?

That is a nominal geometric starting point if the centerline stays unchanged, not a measurement of the installed tire. Actual section width depends on the tire design and measuring rim. If you also change wheels, offset and wheel width introduce another change. Use the tire maker's dimensions and have the proposed combination checked.

Does wider automatically mean better?

No performance result follows from these dimensions alone. This comparison does not test grip, braking, noise or fuel use. Choose an approved tire suited to your vehicle and conditions rather than treating a larger width number as an upgrade.

Michelin: finding the correct tire size. GarageCalc calculated the table as diameter = wheel inches × 25.4 + 2 × width × aspect ratio / 100. Calculated dimensions do not include brand variation, wear, load or deflection.
