A bolt pattern is written as lug count × pitch circle diameter: the diameter, in millimeters, of the circle that passes through the center of every lug hole. 5x114.3 is five lugs on a 114.3 mm circle. The inch column is the same diameter divided by 25.4, which is how US listings label patterns like 5x4.5 or 6x5.5.
The adjacent-lug column is the number you can actually put a ruler on: the center-to-center distance between two neighboring holes. On 4, 6 and 8 lug hubs you can also measure straight across opposite holes and read the PCD directly; on a 5 lug hub there is no opposite hole, so you measure two neighbors and multiply by 1.7013. The bolt pattern calculator does that conversion and matches the result to the nearest standard pattern.
Patterns a few millimeters apart, such as 5x112 and 5x114.3 or 6x135 and 6x139.7, look identical on the bench and are not interchangeable. Open a pattern's page for its look-alikes and the full vehicle list, and remember that bolt pattern is only one of the checks: center bore, offset and lug seat type also have to match.
