A steady ABS warning light means the anti-lock braking system may not work when you need it. In many vehicles the regular brakes still operate, but the wheels may lock during hard braking. If the red brake-system warning is also on, or the brake pedal or stopping response feels abnormal, pull over safely and arrange assistance rather than continuing to drive. Your owner's manual takes priority because warning behavior differs by vehicle.
What the light is telling you
ABS helps prevent wheel lockup during hard braking so the driver can retain steering control. It does not promise a shorter stop on every surface. A light that appears briefly when the car starts and then goes out is normally a system check. A light that stays on or returns while driving is a warning to have the system checked. Honda's Civic brake-system guide explains both the function and the warning.
ABS light: what to do next
| What you see or feel | What it can mean | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light appears at startup, then turns off | Normal lamp and system check on many vehicles. | Check your owner's manual if the lamp behaves differently from its stated startup sequence. |
| ABS light stays on; no red brake warning; braking feels normal | The anti-lock function may be unavailable even though ordinary braking remains. | Drive cautiously only if your vehicle manual permits it. Avoid relying on ABS in a hard stop and arrange prompt inspection. |
| ABS and red BRAKE warnings stay on | There may also be a fault in the regular brake system. | Stop in a safe place and follow the manual's emergency guidance. Arrange a tow or roadside assistance if the warning remains on. |
| Brake pedal feels soft, sinks, or the car does not stop normally | Braking may be impaired regardless of which lamps are lit. | Pull over as soon as it is safe. Do not continue driving to test the brakes; seek roadside assistance. |
The distinction between ABS-only and combined warnings matters. Toyota's Tundra manual calls for an immediate safe stop when both ABS and brake-system warnings remain on. AAA's warning-light guide likewise distinguishes loss of ABS assistance from a red brake-system warning.
Can you drive with only the ABS light on?
Do not treat the amber ABS light as proof that all braking has failed. Honda says normal braking remains available in its Civic when the ABS indicator is on, while the anti-lock feature may not operate. That is a vehicle-specific statement, not a clearance for every car. Check your owner's manual, slow down, leave more room to stop, and get the car inspected promptly. If another brake warning appears or braking changes, stop safely instead.
Why did the ABS light come on?
The warning identifies a system problem, not a failed part. A dashboard icon cannot tell you whether the issue is a sensor, wiring, the control system or something else. A technician needs to read the vehicle's ABS fault information and check the relevant components before recommending a repair. Do not replace parts or clear a warning solely from an internet list of common causes.
Think about what changed shortly before the light appeared. For example, Honda cautions that the wrong tire size or type can affect ABS operation. If you recently changed tires, verify the vehicle-approved size and tire specifications. Our tire size comparison tool can show a dimensional difference, but it cannot diagnose an ABS fault or approve a tire for your car.
ABS activation is different from an ABS warning
A pulsating brake pedal during a hard stop can be normal when a working ABS system intervenes. Honda advises holding firm, steady pressure when that happens. A warning light that remains illuminated after startup is a separate signal that the system needs attention. Read your specific vehicle's manual for the exact lamp behavior, especially if other brake or stability-control messages appear.
Quick answers
Does an ABS light mean the brakes do not work?
Not necessarily. Some manufacturer manuals say the regular brakes remain available with an ABS-only warning. The anti-lock function may be lost. A red brake warning or abnormal brake feel changes the situation and calls for a safe stop.
Will turning the car off clear the problem?
The lamp may disappear after a restart, but that does not identify or repair the cause. If it stays on or returns, follow the owner's manual and arrange diagnosis. Do not repeatedly restart a moving vehicle to chase a warning.
